I recently stumbled upon this word, as of today recent. And it means the opening at the center of an ancient roman house that collects rainwater in a basin. It first occurred to me this is really cool and totally want in, then I followed that thought with “wait I live in the north, not going to be as cool in the winter or rather it would be too cool for it to work for me.” Still debating the idea currently for my imaginary house and land.
Anyways, back to the main topic.
I thought about its open concept and stability. A roman structure so strong and robust that it lasts for thousands of years, small chips and cracks over the years of weathering and natural decay. A structure built to last and stable over the course of a millennium. But also open to reception of the natural weathering process, not closed off from the natural forces.
Opposition to external resistance, weakens the structure faster than simply accepting it as a whole. Changing the thought process from how we avoid this to how can we adapt to it.
The resistance to how things is only makes it harder to deal with and in this case more building material. For us, it’s our energy, resistance wastes precious energy and time.
I think after learning this new word, I should be more accepting of new ideas, and the best way forward is not to cover it up. But through the least path of resistance to make the most progress.
Working with the environment instead of around it.
